According to Chris Bowman, Phillip was a watchmaker who was 4 feet 11 inches tall when, on March 17, 1915 he enlisted in the 20th Battalion AIF as a bugler. On the June 25, 1915 he sailed for Gallipoli aboard the troopship Berrima. He was wounded by a bomb at Russell Tops, Gallipoli and died aboard the hospital ship Galeka. He was buried at sea.
