Michael was born in London in 1798. He married Catherine Lee in London in 1838. His occupation at the time was a glass chandelier fitter. He left England with his wife and infant daughter for the Bay of Islands, New Zealand in about 1840. His brother, George Russell had arrived there from Van Diemen's Land in about 1839.
He moved to Hobart, Van Diemen's Land in about 1845, possibly due to the Maori War. George Russell had his hotel burned down when the Maoris attacked Karorareka (now the town of Russell). Michael was mentioned in the Hobart Synagogue minutes, 30 April 1845, as still living in New Zealand. In 1846, Michael donated 60 glass ornaments for the Synagogue chandelier.
He moved to Sydney in 1849 and opened a general store in George Street, near the Rocks. He was listed by the NSW Supreme Court as insolvent on 2 May 1856. From 1861 to 1880 he had an electroplating business with another brother, Mark. His eldest son, Albert was also an electroplater. He died on 29 August 1889 at 149 Campbell Street, Sydney where he was residing with his son-in-law, Henry Solomons. His death certificate stated his occupation as a crockery dealer. His funeral notice in the Sydney Morning Herald, 30 Aygust 1889 stated "The friends of H. Solomon are respectfully invited to attend the Funeral of his late beloved father-in-law; to move from his late residence, 149 Campbell Street, Surrey Hills, this (Friday) afternoon, at 2 o'clock.
