George was born at Sheerness in 1800. His father was Philip Russell and his mother was Catherine. George arrived in Hobart Town, Van Dieman's Land (now Tasmania) on 10 April 1824 on board the "Hope". He worked for his brother, Henry Davis at Launceston. In 1828, Davis went to Sydney to avoid his creditors and left George and another associate, Abraham Aaron, as trustees over his Launceston properties (source: John Levi). In 1839, George went to the Bay of Islands, New Zealand and opened a hotel (the Russell Hotel) on the waterfront at Kororareka (now the town of Russell). In 1841, George was a witness to the first Jewish wedding in New Zealand, that of David Nathan and Rosetta Aarons (nee Jacobs). George's hotel was burned down when the Maoris attacked Kororareka during the Maori War of 1845. Upon hearing of George's misfortune, the Hobart Synagogue sent him a gift of ???10. George then moved to the newly established settlement of Auckland. A notice in the New ZealanderGŠ?????? dated 17 May 1845 stated George Russell is agent for Mr David Nathan under power of attorney. George built a hotel on vacant land owned by J Samuel Polack and allowed Nathan to also build an auction warehouse on the site. Apparently George again got on the wrong side of the local Maoris because Polack had promised the Maoris that a pub would not be built on the land. The Maoris were becoming concerned about increased alcoholism (source: Not Strictly Kosher - Pioneer Jews in New Zealand). George was listed in the 1845 Auckland Police Census at Queen Street, occupation: merchant. In about 1850 he returned to England where he married Rebecca Leman in London. The wedding certificate shows his occupation as a merchant. His brother, Henry Russell, was a witness. George, Rebecca and Henry sailed to New Zealand, departing from the London Docks on 15 November 1850 on the "Cresswell" and arriving at Auckland on 20 March 1851. Rebecca gave birth to their first child, Leon Lionel, on 9 January 1853 at Sydney. A daughter, Catherine, was born at Auckland on 11 April 1855 and a son, Philip, was born on 6 June 1856 at Auckland. George and his family then moved to Melbourne in about 1857 where he had a store in Exhibition St. His son, Philip, died there and a daughter, Leonora, was born and died there in 1857. His occupation was listed as a confectioner. George and his family moved to Goulburn, NSW, where his 5th child, Samuel, was born in 1859 . Samuel's birth certificate shows GeorgeGÅ ??????à?????????????/s occupation as a confectioner. George and his family returned to London some time around 1860. In the 1861 census they were listed as living at 34 Wardour St, Westminster with George's occupation being a fruiterer. George died at 74 Bolsover St, Mareylebone in 1867.
