Daniel Mathena is considered the Progenitor of the Mathen, Matheny, Metteney family. He came to America, Surrey Co.,Va. as the first in a long line. Daniel was our first ancestor in the Virginia Colonies. He came to Jamestown and then CharlesCounty, MD in about 1660. He was a tobacco farmer on the western shore of Maryland near Mattawoman Creek. He owned several farms: " Mathena's Folly", " Cowlands", "Portowne", "Fernes", and "Wentworth-Woodhouse" and "Hope" Plantations. He and severalother Protestant farmers got into trouble along with Lt. Gov. Josiah Fendall of Maryland when they revolted in about 1681 against Lenonard Calvert, Lord Baltimore. Daniel was exiled to Virginia and ended up in Stafford County on the Aquia Creek nearHope Springs. He owned 500 acres on the Aquia Creek near Giles Brent's place. He died there on Oct. 14, 1685 and his tombstone is currently in the parish house of Aquia Episcopal Church, Overwharton Parish where he and his family were members.
