Richard of Montgomery was the youngest son of Sir Richard Herbert of Coldbrook and was born shortly before his Father was executed.
As long as Edward IV was on the throne the Herbert family were devoted "Yorkists"but after the king's death in 1470 the family's support for the House of York faded and was transferred to the Lancastrians and Tudors. From the time of the accession of Henry VII many of the most important strongholds in Wales were under the control of the Herbert family.
Sir Richard of Montgomery was a powerful squire in the Marches; he occupied minor offices at court and in South Wales under Henry VII - at one time he was gentleman usher of the king's chamber. He became agent in Mid Wales for his kinsman and patron Charles Somerset (created Lord Herbert and Earl of Worcester through his marriage to Elizabeth daughter of William, 1st Earl of Pembroke). Later Richard was given the Stewardship of the Crown manors of Montgomery, Kerry and Kedewain and also made Constable of Montgomery castle, which gave him the power to appoint his own officials. The "Booke of Payements" indicates that Sir Richard Herbert represented the Earl of Worcester there at the time of the accession of Henry VIII (1509).
