Notities over Pieter Pietersz Joosten (Man)

Kinderen: Marij Pieters, Maarten (Pietersz) Swiep, Joost Pietersz Joosten, Marij Pieters, Pieter (Pietersz) Man and Marij Pieters.

Children: Marij (Feb 28 1672 Andijk), Maarten (July 2 1673 Wervershoof, married Geert IJsbrants Boon), Joost (Jan 5 1676 Andijk, married Maritje Pieters Boeder), Marij (May 4 1681), Pieter (Aug 29 1683, married Griet Volkerts Prins), Marij (Dec 5 1688).

Pieter married 2 Geertje Nannes on Jan 27 1706. On Nov 27 1706 they did their civic marriage through the notary Jacob Roosekrans, and one of their witnesses was Cornelis Jansz Bakker Jacob's son-in-law. In it they stipulate that the two of them share all belongings, but it seems they gave half of Pieter's belongings to his sons.

Pieter was also known as “alias Joosje” or “Joosten”, after his mother’s grandfather. Baptism records of his children call him Pietersz, Joos, alias Joosje and Joosten. Later court documents refer to him as Pieter Pietersz de O. / Joosjen. There was a Pieter Joosten who went to Greenland several times, but this is probably a grandson of Pieter. He was also known as Grietjes Piet and lived in the Andijk area in 1756.

Pieter also seems to have taken the nickname Pieterman. Jantjen Pietermans who lived in de Kathoek died in 1732 - this seems to be Pieter's wife Jannetjen. One of his sons in his death record was called Joost Pietersz Pieterman. And of course another son went by Pieter Pieterman and,.. well, just Pieterman. There were only 3 other men known to be going by the name Pieterman in all of Westfriesland in the early to mid 1700's that don't seem to have a connection to the family, and they only have 1 record each.

There was another Pieter Pieters (Braaf) having children starting in 1677 – obviously they took on surnames to keep from getting mixed up. Pieter Pietersz, alias Joosje, from the Kathoek (this would have to be our Pieter) made profession of faith on February 14 1706. It was a little late in life, but many people did wait a while before making profession of faith, and some never did at all. It was considered a very serious thing.

Pieter and Jannetje moved around a lot. When they were married in 1671, Pieter lived in Broekoord and Jannetje in Wervershoof. According to Maarten’s birth record in 1673, they lived in Driehuizen. One website says there was a Driehuizen by Wervershoof and another by Andijk, but they're probably the same place. Pieter would have lived in the one that was inland of Bangert. In 1681 there's a record saying they lived in Wervershof. By 1706 they lived on the opposite side of Andijk in Kathoek. Since most of their children were baptized in Andijk, they must have commuted to their favorite church rather than attending the one close by. Then they jumped back across most of Andijk to Kathoek (almost into Bovenkarspel). It isn't recorded why, but Kathoek was known for having a magazijn (warehouse) where materials to build up and protect dikes stood. He may have gone there to take care of the windmill and the dikes. On May 27 1708 two court documents with Pieter listed are found: one lists him in de Buurtje, close to Driehuizen again and the other puts him in Andijk-Oost by Bovenkarspel (in other words, Kathoek). Perhaps he had 2 residences? In 1711 a court document puts him in de Buurtje. Pieter's burial record in 1722 simply says he was from Noorderdijk, a term that covered most of the Andijk area.

Pieter Pieters Joosjen is listed with his brothers in a few court documents including the will of his mother Marij Pieters dated Feb 27 1674. the will of his father Pieter Simons Manjes dated June 24 1682 and a contract dated May 27 1708. He lived in Broekoord in 1674, in Klampbuurt in Andijk in 1682 (probably his step-mother's residence) and in Bovenkarspel in 1708.

One gets the feeling that Pieter was quite wealthy. Alijt Pieters, a dienstmaagt (maid) of his, made profession of faith in Andijk on February 2 1710. And his father's will, dated 1682, lists 3 residences for Pieter: Andijk onder Grootebroek, Driehuizen onder Wervershoof and Hoog and Laag Zwaagdijk onder Wervershoof.

Pieter's boedelscheiding (division of property) dated March 22 1723 lists Pieter and his wife Geertje Nannes living in de Buurtje, his sons Maarten Joosjen, Pieter Man and Joost Joosjen, and his stepson Cornelis Teunisz Timmer. Geertje received land of 2 morgens on the Klampsloot called Hoog en Laagh, the house and the grounds around it, and the cows. His children were to inherit these things after she died. Geert and Pieter signed their names, indicating they could read & write. Maarten signed it with a squiggle looking like 2 M's stuck together, indicating he couldn't.
