SHALLOTTE, N.C. - James Merell Hawes, 78, of White Street, diedWednesday, May 1, 2002.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 tonight at Brunswick Funeral Service &Crematory, Shallotte.
The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church ofShallotte. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Cemetery.

SHALLOTTE - James Merell Hawes, 78, of White Street, died Wednesday, May1, 2002.
Mr. Hawes was born on April 26, 1923, in Brunswick County. He was a son of the late Robert Bruce and Elba Raye Bennett Hawes. He was retired as aservice maintenance mechanic with the International Paper Company. He wasa U.S. Army Veteran. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Douglas Hawes Sr. and Robert Hawes.
Mr. Hawes was a member of several civic groups including Past Master ofthe Shallotte Masonic Lodge, Past Worthy Patron of the Brunswick Chapter#341 Eastern Star, member of the Sudan Temple Shrine, Scottish RiteBodies, York Rite Bodies and The Forty and Eight, retired member of theShallotte Fire Dept., member of Shallotte Vol. Rescue Squad, Lions Club,Woodmen of the World, Past Commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars, memberof the American Legion and Elks.
Mr. Hawes is survived by his wife, Lena Caison Hawes; two daughters,Danni Long, Wilmington, NC, and Merlene Dew, Bolton, NC; one brother;Maurice Joe Hawes, Shallotte, NC; three sisters, Laye Gore, Sunset Beach,NC, Raye Troutman, Greenville, NC, and Beth Conner, Berea, KY; and threegrandchildren, Wendi Moore, Suzanne Moore, Patrick Dew.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 25th, inthe First Baptist Church of Shallotte by the Rev. Dr. Randy Gruber.Burial will follow in the Chapel Hill Cemetery with Masonic Ritesaccorded by Shallotte Masonic Lodge #727 AF&AM.
Family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. on Friday, May 24th at thefuneral home.
Casketbearers will be Matthew Woods, Cray Milligan, Albert C. Gore Jr.,David Moore, Wayne Mason and Jimmy Tripp.
Family request in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Friends of J.Merell Hawes Fund, c/o Security Savings and Bank, P.O. Box 3288,Shallotte, NC 28459. All proceeds in the fund now and in the future willbe donated to the Brunswick County Search and Rescue and the Tri-BeachVol. Fire Department.
