Deceased Name: McALILEY -- MURIEL ACKERMAN MacELHINNEY
Loving sister, wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully at the Paramount Senior Living Center in Cranberry Township on July 24 at the age of 86. Muriel was preceded in death by her parents as well as her husband, Alexander McAliley and her sister, Beverly MacElhinney. Muriel was a graduate of Averett College in Virginia, and prior to marriage, commuted from her family home in Glen Rock, New Jersey, to work as a buyer in New York City. After marriage, she quickly became the consummate 50s mom and homemaker (although, unlike June Cleaver, she didn't wear pearls and high heels while vacuuming). She and Alexander moved the family from Greenfield, Massachusetts, to Pittsburgh in 1960 to build and run what was then North Hills Passavant Hospital. She served with the PTA, was a hospital volunteer and helped out with various fundraising events. Muriel had a flair for creative writing and produced skits and created programs for various charitable endeavors long before computer desktop publishing came along. To the delight of neighborhood children, she spent a lot of her summers as a "lifeguard" at the backyard pool. She was pretty cool about being stranded at home as one by one, her newly licensed children found reason to "borrow" the family station wagon. She will be most remembered for her giving nature, her charm, her love of life, for staying calm in times of crisis and for putting her family first. Muriel is survived by her four children, Lauren McAliley of Cleveland, OH, Laine Baressi of Moon Township, Scott McAliley of Philadelphia and Todd McAliley of Cranberry Township; her son-in-law, Mike Baressi; and daughters-in-law, Donna Burt- McAliley and Mary Beth McAliley . She is also survived by her four loving grandchildren, Kristen (Baressi) Wilmus, Courtney Baressi, Brooke Baressi, and Laura Kay McAliley . A private service will be held this weekend as was Muriel's wish. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the GLENN-KILDOO FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION SERVICES, INC., 130 Wisconsin Avenue, Cranberry Township, PA 16066. In lieu of cards or flowers, the family requests donations be made in her memory to the Passavant Hospital Foundation, 9100 Babcock Boulevard, Pittsburgh, PA 15237. Dino and Grams together again, they are both missed by all! Expressions of sympathy may be shared with Muriel's family at:
