KITTRELL CEMETERY (#19)
also known at various times as
CANE CREEK, BURTON, GRAY, MCGHEE, and WARREN
T25N R5E SEC 7
Map #6
This cemetery has a lot of unmarked graves. To provide as much information as possible, additional research was done and information compiled from sources other than headstones. It is said that there may be burials here from as early as 1820.
Samuel KITTRELL of Granville Co., NC, son of Samuel & Catherine, was born 19 Feb 1777, d. 1838. He married Ellender [Eleanor] SHAMWELL, 30 Dec 1800 in NC. She was born 20 Sep 1780. Her death date is unknown, but she is buried in the KITTRELL cemetery, near where the family first settled when they came to the area in 1819.
Their children:
- Elizabeth H. (b. 4 Oct 1801, NC.) md 7 Nov 1820, Wayne Co., MO, Pennington POWERS ( b. 14 Dec 1793, in SC)
- Lemuel (b. 16 Mar 1805), md (1) Elizabeth _____; (2) Lurannah PONDER. Lived in Doniphan where a stone has been erected in the old city cemetery to honor him as the first citizen of Doniphan. Lurannah is buried in the PONDER cemetery.
- Solomon (b. abt 1807), md (1) 3-11-1830, Lucy EPPS (abt 1807 - 1849), daughter of Daniel & Nancy
(CARTER) EPPS; (2) Louisa MCMINN. He had 10 children - 6 by his first wife, and 4 by the second. Solomon is buried in Warren Cemetery, as is his father, Samuel, and his son, Lemuel. It is presumed Lucy is buried there also.
- Joseph (birth, death and burial unknown, but apparently died young), md Rebecca RUSHIN (b. 1821/22). They had one child., Polly Ann. After Joseph’s death, Rebecca md. abt 1842, James BRANNUM.
Polly Ann KITTRELL, (1 Mar 1837 - 13 Mar 1927), md Washington POWERS (24 Nov 1833 - 6 Aug 1889). Both buried POWERS cemetery.
[authors note: there are no markers found for this couple in POWERS cemetery, which is
recorded in CEMETERIES OF SOUTHWESTERN BUTLER COUNTY MISSOURI (first edition, 1994, p. 90), and their names do not appear in that volume. However, this information does appear in the revised edition, pub.1997]- Samuel (b. 1820), md (1) Amelia _____; (2) Sarah BARBER.
