Thomas Wayne Stanley, 80, died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001, in Charlotte, N.C.
He was born Sept. 19, 1920, in Loris. His parents were Foster and RubyStanley.
He was president of Hardwick Fertilizer Co. and Hardwick Insurance Agencyin Loris. In 1998, he and his wife, Nell, were the Loris Citizens of theYear and the previous year, they were the grand marshals for the LorisChristmas Parade. Having served as scoutmaster for 33 years, one of hisproudest achievements was receipt of scouting's prestigious award, theSilver Beaver Award. Under his guidance, 24 Loris scouts became EagleScouts. He served as chairman of the Horry County Marketing Commission,was a member of the Board of Directors of Loris Industrial Developers,past president of the Loris Lions Club, chairman of the Board ofDirectors of the Loris Chamber of Commerce, chairman of the Board ofTrustees of Loris Methodist Church and was a Sunday school teacher. TheMethodist Church awarded him the Flaming Cross award. He was a member ofthe Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Loris Masonic Lodge.
In 1937, he graduated from Tabor City High School, where he served assenior class president. In 1942, he volunteered in the Navy. Stationed inthe Pacific theater, he was an aviation machinist first class andaviation cadet in flight training.
He was predeceased by his wife, Nell Winesett Hardwick Stanley.
Survivors include his children and their spouses, Danya Hardwick Yon andher husband, James, of Huntersville, N.C., Nathan E. Hardwick III and hiswife, Ann, of Dunwoody, Ga., and Susan Hardwick Fitch and her husband,Burt, of Charlotte, N.C.; six grandchildren, James Hardwick Yon, ThomasWebster Yon and his wife, Denise, Nathan E. Hardwick IV, Natalie NellHardwick, Alexander Ashley Hardwick and his wife, Debbie, and Daniel BurtFitch; three great-grandchildren, *Christopher Thomas Flynt, *VictoriaMae Yon and *Avery Nicholas Yon; a brother, Richard Stanley and his wife,Lena; a sister, Rebecca Hartenstine and her husband, Charles; asister-in- law, **Ruby Stanley; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Samuel Stanley.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 tonight at Hardwick Funeral Home.
A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Patterson Cemetery inLoris, followed by a memorial service at Loris Methodist Church.
Memorials may be made to the Building Fund, Loris Methodist Church inLoris; the Pee Dee Council; the Boy Scouts of America in Florence forLoris Boy Scout troops; or to the Loris City Hall Restoration Fund inLoris.
