Marshall M. Harrelson served the Confederacy as a member of the Columbus Guards, Company D of the Twentieth Regiment. He was among ten men cited for their "cool and daring bravery" at Chancellorsville. Marshall served with his first cousins Benjamin M., George J., Isaiah, and Josiah B.Harrelson, in May 1863.
After the war, Marshall came back to Columbus to farm and to sell produce at Clarendon. As a justice of the peace and a magistrate, he wrote wills, deeds, and warrants throughout Williams and South Williamstownships. Harrelson performed many marriages and was clerk of MillBranch Primitive Baptist Church. In 1895 Marshall M. Harrelson was elected as a democrat to serve in the 1895 session of the North Carolina General Assembly.
A letter owned by his great-great nephew, Richard Wright, indicates someof the flavor and character of the man:

Dear Sir,
I herewith send you your Land Deed, H. G. and wife signed it and I had it in my pocket. When I left home I failed to leave it. You can it the others to sign it and when I come home I can probate it for you if you don't git it done before. I am gitting along very well up here. Mr.Auman is a democrat and his wife is a member of the Hardshell Church. So you may guess I am fareing all right. You and Lillian write me a long letter and give me all the news. Hope you are both well.

When the letter was written, M. M. was visiting in Moore County with Jason Auman. He was writing to M. A. Wright, who married his niece Lillian Ward. Lillian was the daughter of Anzaline Harrelson and JohnWilliam Ward.
In May of 1863, he was cited for "cool and daring bravery" at the battleof Chancellorsville. He served as a Democratic Representative in the 1895Session of the North Carolina House of Representatives. He was alsoChairman of the Columbus County Board of Elections in the early 1890'sand served as Clerk of the Mill Branch Primitive Baptist Church for 50years. He was Justice of the Peace for many years and wrote most of thedeeds in the area and preformed many of the marriages.
