"I have a copy of a picture of Jesse Smith in my possession being given to me by Dorothy Benton. Jesse appears to be in his 30's and has dark hair combed back and covering part of his ears. He has a dark beard and mustache and is wearing a tailor coat with wide lapels and a white shirt. He is handsome and portrays a look of sincerity and kindness."
Per Susan Formuduval Thomas ((XXXXX@XXXX.XXX)):
They lived in what is now Little River/Buck Creek area.

!LAND: 1 Mar 1820 Horry Co DB B-1, 300: Jesse Smith gives to dau Sarah Reaves, wife of John Reaves, 622A consisting of one tract of 200A [no source given]; one tract of 300A, part of a tract granted to Daniel Conner & bequeathed to Solomon & Mark Reaves Jr. by will of Mark Reaves, Sr., dcd;
one tract of 122A granted to Jesse Smith on Buck Creek. Also personal property, hogs, sheep, etc. Jesse Smith signs by mark. Witnesses Jesse Smith, Jr., Margaret Paterson. Testator Samuel G. Cochran who saw Jesse Smith sign along with Jesse Jr. & Margaret Patterson [sic]. However the signature reads "Jas. G. Cochran." William Todd, J. U. Recorded 20 Sep 1827.At first I thought this deed was in lieu of a will, but research in SC Archives on 9-11-98 indicates that Jesse Smith owned a large amount of land, at least a couple of thousand acres. How did he acquire the 300A originally granted to Daniel Conner?
In 1806 Jesse Smith purchased from the heirs Mary Marlow, Obedience Marlow and the daughter who married David Barnhill the land that David Marlow, Sr., their grandfather, bought in 1772 on Buck Creek from James and Charity Lewis. I therefore conclude that Jesse Smith lived somewhere on Buck Creek near the land that David Marlow, Sr., purchased. Jesse Smith is the father of Elizabeth Smith who married John Patterson. They were parents of James Gold (or Gould ) Patterson who married Martha Marlow, daughter of Nathaniel Marlow II and Martha Faulk. This implies that Nathaniel Marlow II was living fairly near Jesse Smith and could mean an earlier relationship.!NOTE: I cannot be sure which John Reaves is Sarah Smith's husband. However, the Reaves and the Conners are connected for several generations. I still don't have them sorted out
NOTE: Sarah married John B. Reaves, s/o Mark Reaves and "Spicey" Ann Smith - HC
!ESTATE: SC Archives, Court of Equity microfilm, p 18 & 19: Personal estate of Jesse Smith sold on 15 and 16 March 1827, signed John Durant, Ordinary; Thos D. Todd (title can't read); J. G. Neighbors who purchased included (there were others) Mark Reaves, Elizabeth Patterson, Sarah Reaves, Richard Todd, Solomon Todd, John Bellemee. 9 slaves, unnamed, were sold.
!SOURCE: Marion Lynn Laster (XXXXX@XXXX.XXX) has a web page on GENDEX which shows that Jessie Smith married Mercy Bellamy. [My previous information from Janet Woodard showed that Jesse Smith married Mary Bellamy. May be same person. SC Archives microfilm of estate papers seen 9-98 shows that Mercy Smith bought a fair amount of the estate of Jesse Smith, dcd, in 1827. Mercy may be a nickname for Mary.] They were the parents of Elizabeth Smith who married John Patterson. Their son John Gold Patterson married Martha Marlow, daughter of Nathaniel Marlow II. 8-15-98 I asked MarionLaster for sources & to share data bases.The South Carolina Magazine of Ancestral ResearchSCMAR, Volume VINumber 2, Spring, 1978Requests for InformationSCMAR, Vol. VI, Spring 1978, No. 2, p.128Smith-BELLAMY.
