Deceased Name: Reed, ex-music librarian at UNC-CH
Ida M. Reed didn't have enough space for her personal library of 4,000 books, so she just built an addition onto her home. The bookcases went from floor to ceiling.
Reed, a music librarian at UNC-Chapel Hill from 1984 to 1997, died Sunday at UNC Hospitals after a 13-year struggle with cancer. She was 63.
Friends say Reed was an accomplished and determined person. She was an expert quilter and a talented cook who specialized in cakes and pies.
Her scholarship is well-known. She edited the fifth edition of a classic work in the field, Vincent H. Duckles' "Music Reference and Research Materials," in 1997. Nearly a decade later, the book is widely considered to be the gold standard, said James Pruett of Chapel Hill, former professor and music librarian at UNC-CH and former chief of the music division at the Library of Congress.
"She was sort of a quintessential fact-checker," Pruett said Wednesday after Reed's funeral. "She tried not to let anything get by."
Reed was active in the Music Library Association, a professional organization that recognized her career in 1997 with its Distinguished Service Award.
She was a mentor to music and library science students at UNC-CH. One former student traveled from California to visit her during the summer, and several ventured from across the country to attend Wednesday's service.
"She had an enormous influence on a lot of students," Pruett said, "helping them with their research and as a mother confessor. They had a great deal of love and affection for her."
Reed loved British TV dramas and the London theater. She also had thousands of CDs and videotapes of musical performances in her personal library.
For the past 13 years, she had cancer and underwent various treatments, including a bone-marrow transplant. Time and time again, she seemed to conquer the disease.
"She was a person that was great to know," said a friend, Janice Wing of Chapel Hill. "You just marveled at her. You called her wonder woman."
Reed graduated from Florida Presbyterian College, now Eckerd University, with a bachelor's degree in musicology. She received two degrees from the University of Pittsburgh -- a master's in musicology in 1966 and a master's in library science in 1968. She worked in the Carnegie Public Library in Pittsburgh, serving as head of its music and art departments from 1974 to 1984.
She is survived by her brothers, George McAliley , Charlie McAliley and Sammy McAliley .
