BARONY of UMFREVILLE (III) 1391 to 1421
Sir Gilbert de Umfreville, of Harbottle, Hessle, Kyme, etc., only son andheir [of Thomas & Agnes], b. 18 Oct 1390 at Harbottle Castle, andbaptized in the church there. He Inherited the Kyme property, co.Lincoln, on the death, 18 December 1398, of Maud, Countess of Angus andNorthumberland. He is said to have accompanied his uncle, Sir Robert deUmfreville, in an incursion into Scotland 1409-1410. Some chroniclers[English and French] style him Earl of Kyme, but no such title is evergiven him in any formal document. He was at the Battle of Agincourt in1415; appointed Captain of Caen, 30 September 1417, and during the siegeof Rouen, 1418-19, was commissioned with the Earls of Warwick andSalisbury, &c., to treat for the surrender of that city. He was appointedCaptain of Pontoise 2 February, of Eu 12 February, and of Neufchatel 21February 1418/9. He m. before 3 Feb 1412/3, Anne, 5th daughter of Ralphde Nevill, 1st Earl of Westmorland, by his 1st wife, Margaret, daughterof Hugh Stafford, 2nd Earl of Stafford. He dsp., being slain at Battleof Bauge in Anjou, 22 Mar 1420/1. Admon., as Gilbert Umfreville, knight,lord of Redesdale, 19 Feb 1421/2. His [Gilbert's] coheirs in 1421 were his 5 sisters. (1) Elizabeth, thenaged 30, and wife of Sir William Elmeden, of Elmeden (now Embleton), co.Durham. She d. 23 Nov 1424, leaving 4 daughters her coheirs. (2) Maud,then aged 28, and wife of Sir William Ryther, of Ryther, co. York. Shed. 4 Jan 1434/5, leaving William Ryther, her son and heir. (3) Joan,then aged 26 (48 in 1437), and wife of Sir Thomas Lambert. She wasliving 1446. (4) Margaret, then aged 24 (47 in 1437), and widow ofWilliam Lodington, of Gunby, co. Lincoln, Justice of the Common Pleas,who d. 9 Jan 1419/20. She m. 2ndly, before 26 Apr 1444, John Constable,of Halsham in Holderness (afterwards knight). She d. 23 June 1444,leaving John Constable her son and heir. (5) Agnes, then aged 22 (46 in1437), and wife of Thomas Haggerston, of Haggerston, co. Durham. She wasliving in 1446. Among their lineal representatives the Barony ofUmfreville, created by writ of summons 1295 and the Earldom of Angus, (ifconsidered as an Enligh Earldom in fee, created by his summons under thattitle) are in abeyance, while the Scotch (sic.) Earldom (disregarding theconfiscation thereof) is in the representative of Agnes, wife of ThomasClaxton, and 1st daughter and coheir of Elizabeth Elmeden, abovementioned. [Complete Peerage I:152-3]
