THOMAS DE MULTON, 1st son of Thomas DE MULTON of Egremont by his 2ndwife, Ada, daughter and coheir of Hugh DE MORVILL, Forester of Cumberland(See MULTON of Egremont), was his mother's heir. His father gave him theLincs manors of Whaplode and Holbeach, and at Michaelmas 1242 heaccounted for his relief on succession to his mother's inheritance.Before Michaelmas 1252 he had confirmation of all the liberties of theforest of Cumberland as his ancestors had held them, and custody ofCarlisle Castle. He was summoned for service in Wales in 1258; in 1264-65he sided with the Barons against the King, but it is uncertain whether itwas he or his namesake nephew of Egremont who was by them appointedWarden of the Coast, and (or) keeper of Carlisle Castle. On 18 June 1266he had a safe conduct to come to Court, provided he kept faith with theKing and his heirs; and, in July 1270, protection for 3 years.
He married Maud, daughter and heir of Hubert DE VAUX of Gilsland. He diedbefore 14 January 1270/1. His widow died shortly before 28 May 1293.[Complete Peerage IX:405-6, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
