SIR THOMAS DE POYNINGS, (son and) heir, was a knight in April 1315. InFebruary 1322/3 he was preparing for service in Scotland under Earl deWarenne; and in March 1323/4 was going to Aquitaine with Edmund, Earl ofKent. In May 1324 he was summoned by proclamation to the Great Council atWestminster. He took part in the Dunstable tournament in 1333; wassummoned against the Scots in 1335 and 1337, and in May 1336 wasappointed one of the custodians of the ports and coasts of Surrey andSussex against the Scots and their foreign allies. He was summoned inApril 1337 to a council of prelates and magnates at Stamford, and in Junefollowing to a similar assembly at Westininster. He served with a retinuein the King's expedition to Flanders in 1338, and was in Antwerp in July1339 (e).
He married, about 1317, Agnes (aged 22 and more in May 1321), youngerdaughter and coheir of Richard DE ROKESLEY, of Westwood (in Preston) andRuxley, Kent, by Joan, heir of her brother Bertram DE CRIOL, and daughterof Bertram DE CRIOL (died 1295), by Eleanor, younger daughter and coheirof Maud D'AVRANCHES. He was killed, 10 October 1339, in an attack on thecastle of Honnecourt, on the St. Quentin canal, arr. of Cambrai (g). Hiswidow died some time before 22 December 1346, and was buried atPoynings. (e) In Mar 1336/7 he was granted an annuity of 200 marks, till he couldreceive an equivalent in land, in recognition of his good services to theKing's brother, John of Eltham, late Earl of Cornwall, and of his thenengagement with the King--with the assent of Parliament.
(g) Idem (vol viii, no 231) (which dates his death 17 Oct, and gives hisson's age as 22 and more in Nov 1339). On 14 Oct, the King, inconsideration of Thomas's death in his service, and his affection forhim, granted seisin and his marriage to his son Michael, though still aminor. Sir Thomas had younger sons (Thomas, John, Luke, and Richard -3rd Lord Poynings).
