Matthew Hussey, son of Henry Hussey and Cecily de Stanton Hussey, wasborn about 1205, probably in Wiltshire. He was married probably in thelatter part of 1234 to Agnes de Saunford, daughter of Hugh de Saunfordand Joan de Saunford. Marriage of Agnes de Saunford had been arranged inNovember 1233 to Robert Lupus, but on April 5, 1234 her mother paid afine of 40 marks "and received license for Agnes to marry whom shepleased," according to "Complete Peerage." The fine was reduced by 20marks shortly afterwards at the request of John de Plessis who hadmarried the older sister of Agnes de Saunford. Joan de Saunford waspardoned the remaining 20 marks of the find December 1, 1237.

"History of Buckinghamshire" records that "Walter Hussey [sic] wasmarried to Agnes de Sanford, daughter of Hugh de Sanford." When Hugh deSaunford died in the latter part of 1234 Matthew Hussey received tenancyof Missenden manor in Buckinghamshire which his father-in-law had held.On April 9, 1235 Matthew Hussey paid 500 marks for livery of his father'sestate. He held the "fee of Littleton" in 1235, according to "WiltshireFeet of Fines." Upon the death of his mother in 1236 Matthew Husseyinherited on May 14, 1236 additional property which included Elingmanor. In 1238 the sheriff of Wiltshire was ordered by royal writ toenforce the surrender by Matthew Hussey to his niece, Maud Hussey acaracute [about 100 acres] of land which had belonged to her grandfatherHenry Hussey. On August 11, 1239 Matthew Hussey gave a "tithe of 10s" tothe church at West Lavington, Wiltshire, according to "History ofWiltshire."

In 1242-43 Matthew Hussey held three fees in Harting manor, Sussex of theEarl of Arundel. In 1244 he granted to the Abbot of Dureford land inSouth Moreton, Shalbourne and Sandon manors in Berkshire; Ham andHungerford manors in Buckinghamshire and the chapelry of Standen Husseymanor in Wiltshire, along with other property. In 1252 he had a grantfrom King Henry III of free warren [small game hunting rights] inHarting manor.

On February 6, 1252-53 the sheriff and coroners of Buckinghamshire andKent were ordered "to proceed with the partition of the lands that hadbelonged to Joan de Saunford in Missenden manor, etc, descending byhereditary right to Hugh de Plessis, son of John de Plessis, Earl ofWarwick, and to Agnes, wife of Matthew Hose, the other heir of saidJoan," according to "Complete Peerage." Matthew Hussey would appear tohave been living at that time and was certainly alive January 9, 1252-53,but died before February 14 of that year. On February 27, 1253 King HenryIII instructed the escheators in Berkshire, Sussex and Wiltshire to "sowthe lands late of Matthew Hussey which are in the King's hand and thewardship whereof belongs to the King," according to "Calendar of LiberateRolls."

"Agnes, late wife of Matthewe Huse, in her widowhood, gave 3 1/2 virgatesof land in Missenden manor to Missenden Abbey, with consent of her sonand heir, Henry Huse," according to "Missenden Abbey Records." It isbelieved that Agnes de Saunford Hussey died about 1268.

Matthew being her son and heir, and he had livery 24 May 1236. It wouldappear that there had been another and older son Henry, who dvp., leavingpossibly a daughter and heir, Maud, wife of William Paynel. In 1242/3Matthew held 3 fees in Harting of the Earl of Arundel, and in 1244granted to the Abbot of Dureford land in South Moreton, Shalbourne, andSandon, Berks, Ham and Hungerford, Bucks, the chapelry of Standen Huse,Wilts, &c. In 1352 he had a grant of free warren in Harting. He m.Agnes, younger daughter and coheir of Hugh de Saunford, of Missenden,Bucks, by Joan, his wife. Her marriage as Agnes, younger daughter andone of the heirs of Hugh de Saunford had first been granted to RobertLupus in [Nov] 1233, but on 5 Apr 1234 it is recited that Joan who waswife of Hugh de Saunford for a fine of 40 marks had had licence for Agnesher younger daughter to marry whom she pleased, and the said Joan waspardoned 20 marks at the instance of John de Plessis (who m. the elderdaughter and coheir. Joan was pardoned a further 20 marks 1 Dec 1237.On 6 Feb 1252/3 the sheriff and coroners of Bucks and Kent were orderedto proceed with the partition of the lands that had belonged to Joan deSaunford in Missenden &c., descending by hereditary right to Hugh, son ofJohn de Plessis, Earl of Warwick, and to Agnes, wife of Matthew "Hose",the other heir of the said Joan. Matthew would appear to have been thenliving, and was certainly alive 9 Jan 1252/3, but d. before 14 Feb1252/3. Agnes, late wife of Matthew "Huse", in her widowhood gave 3 1/2virgates in Missenden to Missenden Abbey with consent of her son andheir, Henry Huse. [Complete Peerage VII:10]
