ENID - The funeral for Merle C. Combest, 89, will be 10 a.m. Thursday, May 6, 2010, at First Baptist Church, Glencoe. The Rev. James Beck will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Pawnee. Arrange-ments are by Poteet Funeral Home, Pawnee.
He was born April 6, 1921, in Pawnee to William Claud and Mary Pearl Dexter Combest and died Sunday, May 2, 2010, at the Veterans Center, Claremore.
He served in the Army from July 1942 until October 1945. He received the EAME Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart and the Bronze Star Medal.
He married Shirley Turner. She died in 1991. He later married Delora Mae Rossander Coe May 24, 1997, in Ponca City. They made their home in Glencoe. He worked as a chemist for 33 years for Conoco Inc., Ponca City.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, Glencoe, and American Legion. He was a fiddle player and played music at nursing homes.
Surviving are his wife, Delora, of Glencoe; one daughter, Janice Ann Williamson of Ponca City; stepchildren, L. Melvin Coe of Glencoe, and David Coe and Robert Coe, both of Perry; two brothers, Richard L. Combest of Ponca City and John R. Combest of Enid; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his first wife, Shirley, he was preceded in death by two sons and one stepson.
