Watkins, published 1939, page 175, is a record of the fami ly of James Combest and his wife Ann Sloan (who are James Marion and Georg ia Ann Sloan Combest). This account also mentions, "The children of Rile y, brother of James are as follows..." and lists the names of the childr en William Riley and Delila Sloan Combest.The parents of James Marion Combest are recorded in the family Bible of Li berty Madison Combest (a son of James Marion Combest) as: Father, Austin E den Combest, died TN; and Mother, Margaret Combest, died Casey County, Ken tucky (A copy of this Bible record is on file in the Kentucky Historical S ociety, Frankfort, KentuckyMattie Combest, wife of Liberty Madison Combest, told her grandson, Lew is Combest, Attorney, that the father of James Marion Combest was Austin E den, a mule trader from TN.Carrie Combest, wife of Dr. John Dowell Combest, son of James Marion Combe st, told her daughter-in-law, Sara Combest (Mrs. Henry) that Austin Eden C ombest married Margaret _______ and that one of their children was James M arion Combest.[Rev. James Odell]The 1850 Kentucky Census shows James living with brother William and siste r-in-law Delila (Sloan) in Casey Co, Kentucky.James at age 29 joined the Union Army in the Civil War, serving as a lieut enant and later Captain. He enlisted on 5 August 1862 in Casey Co, Kentuck y, mustered in 8 Sept 1862 at Russellville, Kentucky. He served as lieuten ant and then captain of Carson's Company F, 8th Regiment, Kentucky Cavalr y. He mustered out in Sept 1863. (Combest Genealogy, pp 373)After his military service, James moved the family to Dry Creek near Phi l, in Casey Co, Kentucky. They lived on a 50 acre farm till James die d.
