BARONY OF POYNINGS (IV) 1387
ROBERT (DE POYNINGS), LORD POYNINGS, son and heir, was born at OkefordFitzpaine, Dorset, 3 December 1382, and baptised there. He was summonedto the Great Council to meet at Westminster 15 August 1401, and toanother (probably 1405). Having proved his age and done homage, he hadorder for livery of his lands 17 January 1403/4; and the following June,as a knight, appointed attorneys before going abroad. He was summoned toParliament presumably from 25 August 1404, certainly from 21 December1405 to 13 January 1444/5. In June 1409 he was a commissioner to raisemoney in Somerset; P.C. March 1410/1, and under Henry V and Henry VI.Commissioner of the peace in Surrey, 1413, and of array in Sussex, 1415.In January 1419/20 a commissioner to raise loans in Sussex and Hants; inApril chief supervisor of the muster of men for the fleet at Southampton,and in June chief of the escort to conduct the Duke of Bourbon, theKing's prisoner, to the King in France. He served Queen Catherine at herCoronation feast in London, February 1420/1; in July 1423 he fought atCravant under the Earl of Salisbury; and in February 1423/4 he had acommand in the successful expedition for the recovery of Crotoy, at themouth of the Somme. He sailed again from Dover in June, and took part inthe Duke of Bedford's victory at Verneull in August 1424. In July 1437 hewas summoned to the funeral of Queen Joan, widow of Henry IV, atCanterbury; in February 1440/1 he was joint commissioner for payment ofthe subsidy in Sussex.
He married, 1stly, before 22 October 1397, Elizabeth, daughter of Reynold[Grey], Lord Grey of Ruthyn by his 1st wife Margaret, daughter of Thomas[Ros], 4th Lord Ros of Helmsley and, 2ndly, in or before June 1434,Margaret, elder da. and in her issue coh. of Thomas SQUERY, of Westerham,Kent, and widow of William CROMER (d.
