SIR JOHN DE FERRERS, of Chartley, &c., son and heir, by 1st wife, bornand baptised at Southoe on or about 10 August 1331. On 13 December 1353the King took his homage, and he had livery of the lands of hisgrandmother, Hawise, sometime the wife of John de Ferrers. He was withthe King in the invasion of France, October 1359 to 1360, and in theinvasion of Navarre in 1367. He petitioned the Duke of Lancaster torestore to him the lands forfeited by Robert, Earl of Derby, and thosewhich Margaret, formerly Countess of Derby, had held in dower as of thecastle and honour of Tutbury, co. Stafford, and as of the earldom ofDerby; and the manor of Higham, Northants, which she had held injointure, and the manor of Kingston [Kingston Lacy], Dorset, which shehad inherited from Roger de Quency, formerly Earl of Winchester, herfather.
He married (royal licence, 1 October 1349) Elizabeth, daughter of Ralph(De STAFFORD), EARL OF STAFFORD, by his 2nd wife, Margaret, daughter andheir of Hugh (DAUDELEYE), EARL of GLOUCEST-ER. She had married 1stly(contract dated 12 March 1346/7]I, she then under 13, Fulk LESTRAUNGE(son and heir of Sir John LESTRAUNGE, of Whitchurch, Salop, [LORDLESTRAUNGE]], who was born 2 February 1330/1, and died s.p., 6 September(or 22 or 30 August) 1349, during the pestilence, aged 18. Sir John deFerrers died beyond seas, 2 or 3 April, being, probably, slain at thebattle of Najera, 3 April 1367. The manors, which he and his wife hadheld jointly at his death, and those held in her right of which she hadbeen jointly enfeoffed with her 1st husband, were liberated to her, 24June and 20 August 1367. She married, 3rdly, as 1st wife, Sir Reynold DECOBEHAM, of Sterborough, Surrey [Lord COBEHAM]. She died 7 August 1375.He, who was born at Sterborough, 8 June 1348, and baptised at Edenbridge,died 3 or 6 July 1403, aged 55, and was buried in Lingfield Church:brass.
