SIR JOHN STEWART (who, in right of his wife, was of Balveny, co. Fife),son and heir of Sir James Stewart "the Black Knight of Lorn," by Joan,QUEEN DOWAGER OF SCOTLAND was born about 1440 and was creted EARL OFATHOLL [Scotland] in, or shortly before, 1457. He had a new charter ofthis Earldom 18 March 1481/2, to him and the heirs male of his body, withremainder to the Crown. He is there described as "frater carnalis" of thelate King James II. He took an active part in suppression of therebellion of John, Earl of Ross [Scotland], the last "Lord of the Isles".was AMBASSADOR to ENGLAND 1484, and commanded in the army of King JamesIII against the rebel Lords.
He married, 1stly, in 1459/60, Margaret, DOWAGER COUNTESS OF DOUGLAS[Scotland] (widow of William, 8th Earl, who died February 1451/2, and thedivorced wife of his brother James, 9th Earl), only daughter ofArchibald, 5th EARL OF DOUGLAS [Scotland], by Eupheme GRAHAM, daughter ofEupheme, suo jure COUNTESS OF STRATHERN [Scotland]. She, who was called "the fair maid of Galloway," was heir to her brother William, 6th EARL OFDOUGLAS [Scotland], who d. s.p., 24 November 1440. On this marriage theKing bestowed on them the Lordship of Balveny (one of theforfeited-possessions of the family of Douglas) and other large estates.She was living 21 January 1472/3, but died in or before I475. He married,2ndly, before 19 April 1475) Eleanor, daughter of William (SINCLAIR),EARL OF ORKNEY AND CAITHNESS [Scotland], by his 2nd wife, Marjory;daughter of Alexander SUTHER-LAND, of Dunbeath. By her he had elevenchildren. He died 15 September 1512, at the Laighwood, and was buried inDunkeld Cathedral. His widow died 21 March 1518/19, and was buried withhim.
