Notities over Leopold I "The Illustrious" Margrave of (Leopold I "The Illustrious" Margrave of) Austria

The following information is from a post-em by Curt Hoffeman,(XXXXX@XXXX.XXX):

Birth: ABT 937 in Peochlam, Niedeneosterreich, Austria

I know it is all over the net that he was born in Peochlam, but considerthat the eastern part of what is now Austria was invaded & controlled for50-60 years by the Magyars until Otto I with a force of 20,000 menannihilated a force of 40,000 Magyars (all but 7 died) in 955. I don'tthink any record says where he was born but it was more likely in theBamberg region. Not only did the Magyar control Austria, but theysuccessfully attacked Bavaria itself & killed his grandfather.

Here are my misc. notes (much repetition):

In 976, Leopold von Babenberg was appointed leader of the Ostarrichi, andestablished a dynasty that succeeded for hundreds of years. The Babenbergreign ended in 1246 with the death of Friedrich II. [Ref: Welcome toAustria: http://www.welcome-to.com/Austria/]

The first mention of a ruler in the regained territories east of the Ennsis of Burchard, who probably was count (burgrave) of Regensburg. Itappears that he lost his office as a result of his championship of HenryII the Quarrelsome, duke of Bavaria. In 976 his successor, Leopold I ofthe house of Babenberg, was installed in office. Under Leopold's rule theeastern frontier was extended to the Vienna Woods after a war with theMagyars. [Ref: Ency Britannica online] (See: Battle of Lechfeld)

The Frankish ruler Charlemagne (747-814) established on the territory ofpresent-day Austria the Carolingian March, or border province, betweenthe rivers Enns, Raab and Drava. But 907 saw the collapse of thisprovince following a defeat inflicted by the Magyars. It was not until955 that Otto the Great succeeded in vanquishing the Magyars andre-conquering the region. In 976, Leopold von Babenberg, a descendant ofa noble Bavarian family, was invested with the area between the riversEnns and Traisen. The Austrian Babenburgs descended from Luitpold (Leopold) I, margrave ofthe Ostmark (Austria), who died on 10 July 994. His ancestry is famouslyuncertain, as is that of his wife Richwara (lately thought to be adaughter of Erenfried II, count in the Zülpichgau (Ezzonid) & his wifeRichwara). It has been speculated that this Luitpold was the youngest sonof Arnulf I the Bad, duke of Bavaria (died 14 July 937) by his wifeJudith (possibly from the Unruochings of Friuli). If so, he waspresumably born after the death of their eldest son Luitpold, perhapsshortly before 932. Arnulf was the son of Luitpold, count in Carinthia &margrave in the Bavarian Nordgau, by his wife Kunigunde, daughter of theSwabian count palatine Berthold. Most historians who accept this wouldderive the Popponid Babenburgs from Heinrich I von Babenburg, margrave inFriesland (Frisia), who was killed in battle near Paris on 20 August 886.His first wife was apparently an earlier Judith from the Unruochingfamily, daughter of the margrave Eberhard of Friuli and Gisela ofFrancia. Adalbert was the elder of two definite sons of this Heinrich andJudith, and was beheaded with his brother Adalhard at theres am Main on 9September 906. Adalbert was possibly married (his wife is said to havebeen a Swabian lady named Brunhilda), but no children are recorded as faras I know. The only male-line descendants that are ascribed to hisparents come through the _speculated_ relationship to count Heinrich, grandfather of the brothers Poppo, bishop of Würzburg and Heinrich, archbishop of Trier. Another _speculative_ sibling was Hadwig (b ca953/5, died 24 December 903), first wife of Otto the Illustrious, duke ofthe Saxons, who of course has innumerable descendants. Originally from Bamberg in Franconia, now northern Bavaria, theBabenbergs or Babenberger ruled Austria as counts of the march and dukesfrom 976 - 1248, before the rise of the house of Habsburg.

The earliest known ancestor of the Babenbergs was one Poppo, who earlyin the 9th century was count in Grapfeld, in the area between modernHesse and Thuringia. One of his sons, Henry, sometimes called count ofthe march and duke in Franconia, fell fighting against the Normans in886; another, Poppo, was count of the march in Thuringia from 880 to 892,when he was deposed by the German Carolingian king Arnulf of Carinthia. The family had been favoured by the emperor Charles the Fat, but Arnulfreversed this policy in favour of the rival family of the Conradines.

The leaders of the Babenbergs were the three sons of Duke Henry, whocalled themselves after their castle of Babenberg on the upper Main, round which their possessions centred.

The rivalry between the two families was intensified by their effortsto extend their authority in the region of the middle Main, and thisquarrel, known as the "Babenberg feud," came to a head at the beginningof the 10th century during the troubled reign of the German king Louisthe Child. Two of the Babenberg brothers were killed, and the survivor,Adalbert was summoned before the imperial court by the regent Hatto I,Archbishop of Mainz, a partisan Of the Conradines. He refused to appear, held his own for a time in his castle at Theres against the king'sforces, but surrendered in 906, and in spite of a promise of safe-conductwas beheaded.

From this time the Babenbergs lost their influence in Franconia; butin 976 Liutpold, a member of the family who was a count in the Donnegau(sic: Donaugau?), is described as count of the East Mark, a district notmore than 60 miles in breadth on the eastern frontier of Bavaria whichgrew into the duchy of Austria. Liutpold, who probably received the markas a reward for his fidelity to the emperor Otto II during the Bavarianrising in 976, extended its area at the expense of the Hungarians, andwas succeeded in 994 by his son Henry I. Henry, who continued hisfather's policy, was followed in 1018 by his brother Adalbert and in 1055by his nephew, Ernst, whose marked loyalty to the emperors Henry II andHenry III was rewarded by many tokens of favour.
