Dau. of Simon de Montfort. After Dafydd's defection, and possibly as a reaction
to it, a plan, perhaps originally aired in 1265, was resurrected -- marriage
between Llywelyn and Elinor, a dau. of Simon de Montfort. Elinor's lineage was
highly distinguished; among here uncles were a king of England, a king of
France and a Holy Roman Emperor. Nevertheless, by 1275, when a proxy marriage
took place; there was no political advantage to the union, for the opposition
movement which her father had led was moribund. The king of England took the
view that the marriage was a plot to rekindle dissension within his kingdom,
and such a motion may also have been present in Llywelyn's mind. Elinor sailed
from France to Wales in 1275, but the seizure of her ship led to her
imprisonment at Windsor. Elinor's incarceration was part of a deepening crisis
in the relationship between Llywelyn and Edward I. [A History of Wales, p. 155]
Formal marriage to Llywellyn took place at Worcester Cathedral in October 1278
in the presence of King Edward. [A History, p. 157]
Died on the birth of their only child, Gwenllian, on 19 June 1282. [A History,
p. 158]
Mountfort Tower at Criccieth Castle was probably named after Eleanor, dau. of
Simon de Montfort and wife of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd. [Criccieth Castle, p. 6]
Dau. of Princess Eleanor and Simon de Montfort; m. Llewellyn ap Griffith; had
two daus/coheirs, Gwenllian and Catharine. [Ancestral Roots, Line 260, p. 234]
