!Earl of Arundel; m. Isabella de Mortimer of Wigmore; father of Sir Richard Fitz Alan, Knt.. [Magna Charta Sureties, p. 146, 157]

The great men of the March were Kind Edward I's leading vassals -- 7 of his 10 earls had territories there -- and their pride and presumption were legendary. "In the parts of the March where he now resided," it was said of John Fitzalan, "he was obliged to do nothing at the king's mandate and nothing would he do." [A History of Wales, p. 175]

Lord of Clun, Earl of Arundel; m. Isabella Mortimer; father of Sir Richard Fitz Alan; b. 1246, d. 1271/2. [Ancestral Roots, p. 30]

----------------------------------------------EARLDOM of ARUNDEL (X, 7?) 1267 (title not recognized at the time)JOHN FITZ ALAN, feudal Lord of Clun and Oswestry and [according to the admission of 1443), Earl of Arundel, only son and heir of John by Maud le Botiller, born 14 September 1246. He did homage for his estates 10 December 1267. He, also, though 22 years at his father's decease, was never known as Earl of Arundel, and it is incredible that, if he had ever borne that title, as annexed to the Castle and Honour, the fact would have been ommitted in the inquisition which finds him to have died seized [1272], 56 Henry III, of that Castle and Honour held by the 4th part of a Barony. He married Isabel, daughter of Roger de Mortimer, of Wigmore, by Maud, daughter and coheir of William de Briouze, of Brecknock. He died 18 March 1271/2, and was buried in Haughmond Abbey, Salop. His widow married, before 1273, Ralph d'Arderne (living 1283) and married 3rdly, 2 September 1285, at Poling, Sussex, (privately) Robert de Hastang, for which marriage, having omitted to obtain Royal license, she was fined £1,000. He was living 1 April 1292 and she d. shortly bef. 1 April 1292. [Complete Peerage I:240, XIV:38, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]----------------------------------------------John Fitz-Alan, 6th Earl of Arundel, m. Isabel, dau. of Sir Roger Mortimer (which lady m. 2ndly, Ralph de Arderne, and 3rdly, Robert de Hastings), and dying 1269, was s. by his son, Richard Fitz-Alan, 7th Earl of Arundel.
