Ralph Percy (Sir) 7th son, b. 1425, a reasonably steadfast supporter ofthe House of Lancaster in the Wars of the Roses, changing over to EdwardIV (head of the House of York) only late 1462 to early 1463, a leader ofthe Lancastrians in their defeat by Yorkists at Hedgeley Moor(Northumberland) 25 April 1464, where he was killed (another monumentcalled "Percy's Cross" being erected to commemorate the place where hefell); said to have been unmarried, but was claimed as ancestor of whatpurported to be a Worcester/Salop branch of the Percys by Thomas Percy,Bishop of Dromore, a branch which it was claimed culminated in: [ThomasPercy, an 18th century descendant]. [Burke's Peerage, p. 2120]
Note: Ralph, died at the age of 39, when he would have been expected tohave married and had children. The "said to have been unmarried"probably refers to some visitation where he was listed unmarried andwithout children. The words "said to have been" are quite often usedwhen a statement is based on a visitation where no evidence had beenpresented. I would suspect that this was due to a lack of interest inRalph and his offspring, rather than a statement that he was unmarriedand without issue.
