MRS. AMELIA LANIER, a resident of Poplarville for many years, died at her home in Gulfport at 7:00 p.m. Sunday after a period of ill health. Mrs. Lanier was 86 years of age.
Mrs. Lanier was born in Jefferson, Georgia on August 29, 1872, the daughter of the late J. T. and Laura Lampkin Wood.
She and her late husband and family moved from Poplarville about 15 years ago after having lived here for many years. Her husband, Garland Lanier, died in 1946. The family had many friends here and Mrs. Lanier was loved and respected for her many Christian qualities. They were active in community life and contributed much to the growth of this area. The news of the death of Mrs. Lanier saddened people in the area.
Funeral services were conducted in the chapel of the Jenkins Funeral Home at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday. The Rev. I. H. Sells, pastor of the First Methodist Church officiated. Pallbearers were L. H. Holliday, Jr., James A. Williams, Pat F. Hyde, Bill Williams, Curtis Extine and Arthur Moore Gandy, Jr. Burial was in the local cemetery with Jenkins Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Lanier was the mother of 13 children, seven of whom survive her. They are: Miss Gladys Lanier of Gulfport, J. O. Lanier of McComb, Mrs. W. D. Cammack of New Orleans, Mrs. Montine Lang of Gulfport, Mrs. Milton Balullauf of Oxnard, Calif., Dr. Worth Lanier of York, S. C., and Mrs. Joe Tighe of Washington, D. C. She is also survived by two brothers, J. T Wood of Haschton, Ga., and M. B. Wood of Hattiesburg; four sisters, Mrs. Laura Elrod of Athens, Ga., Mrs. Ann Wood of Jefferson, Ga., and Mrs. L. T. Freeman of Dahlonega, Ga.; fourteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
