John & Martha (Weddle) SharpAbt. 1915
Hello! The information presented on these next few pages deals with my connection to the Sharp family from Cain Store, KY. First of all Cain Store (or Caintown) was once located in Pulaski County, KY just southwest of Somerset. We paid a visit to this area for the first time in June 1999. There isn't really a town there any longer, just a few houses and the cemetery. While there we stopped at a small grocery nearby and found long lost cousins who still live in the area. It was wonderful to find them and we enjoyed our visit with them. My great grandfather was John Gilbert Sharp (pictured). He was born in 1845 to Henry and Celia (Freeman) Sharp who came to Kentucky from Claiborne Co, TN between 1840 and 1850. John Sharp was an educated man and taught school at Caintown. We found the old Caintown School this summer. I don't know for certain that it's the same school where John Sharp taught, but thought you would like to see the old school. My great grandfather was a veteran of the Civil War. He served with the 49th Kentucky Infantry, Company "I". He was injured in The War and walked with a cane and a crutch for the remainder of his life. In 1869 John Sharp married Martha Weddle, youngest child of John Milton "Jack" Weddle Jr. and Elizabeth (Huffman) Kissee. Curious about Jack Weddle and Elizabeth Kissee? Well that makes two of us! Elizabeth (Huffman) Kissee was the widow of Jesse Kissee from Pulaski Co, KY. AND although Elizabeth and Jack Weddle had five children together, it appears that they were never married. Judging by census records, it seems that after Elizabeth's death (between 1851-1860) the children were raised by Jack Weddle and his new bride Julia Warner. All of Jack and Elizabeth's children were mentioned in the will of Jack Weddle Jr. [See Will Below] John and Martha Sharp raised a family of seven girls and two boys, two died as children. My grandmother was Sophia Harrison Sharp, their youngest child. Sophia's middle name was taken from an early settlement established by a Weddle ancestor called Old Harrison. Sophia married my grandfather Jefferson Gregory in 1907. They lived in Pulaski Co. for a few years before moving to Wayne Co, KY where Jeff was originally from. This new web site contains links to my Sharp Family Tree, some great old photographs of my Grandma's family, and a couple of pages with info about John Sharp's Civil War days. If you find family here, I hope you will contact me!
