Retired Lt. Col. Jack E . McDonald, 80, of La-Grange passed away Sunday, January 9, 2011, at his home. Jack was born November 3, 1930 in Evansville, Indiana, son of the late Daniel Earl and Allyne Watson McDonald. Jack enlisted in the United States Navy in September 1948 and was honorably discharged in 1950. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1951 and earned his commission after graduating OCS in December 1956. Jack was a highly decorated combat veteran in the United States Air Force with service in numerous theaters of operation to include both Korean War and the Vietnam War. A Master Navigator with over 3000 hours flight time, he was the recipient of multiple service medals to include the Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Medal with nine Oak Leaf Clusters, USAF Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two Campaign Stars, Korean Service Medal with two Campaign Stars and the United Nations Service Ribbon. He retired with 28 years of active military service August 1, 1977. After the military, Jack had a very successful second career. In addition to being the school administrator at Bethlehem Baptist Christian Academy for several years, he entered the civilian IT field where he helped develop and administer payroll systems for SRT Medstaff, led several successful IT projects for WANG laboratories and developed IT solutions for several other small companies. In his later years he helped establish and run the rental program at Tedd Britt Ford and after moving to Georgia, became very involved in the local community of LaGrange, where he was the bookkeeper for the LaGrange Lyric Theatre and the Explorations in Antiquity Center. Jack was a man of honor, integrity and professionalism. He touched the lives of many people, developed strong friendships that transcended time and distance, and his generosity was beyond measure. He will be greatly missed, but will live on in the hearts and minds of all that knew and loved him. His legacy will never die. Survivors include six children, twelve grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren. Funeral services and a celebration of his lifetime of service both to his country and to his community will be 1:00 Saturday at the Hunter-Allen-Myhand Chapel with Rev. Derrick Lewis officiating. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery with military honors. The family will be at his home and receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 6:00 to 8:00.
