Smith died of a ruptured Appendix William and Elizabeth "Stroud" Smith was said to come from Somerset KY. It is told that William was a hired hand for the Stroud family. Elizabeth knew her family would not approve of their marriage. She helped William steal a wagon and team of horses from her father and eloped to Arkansas. They were said to of crossed the Mississippi River at Memphis TN. They had to spending a few days in Memphis to let the river go down before they could cross. William and Elizabeth did not settle in Arkansas but spent time in Texas and Kansas and returning to Arkansas when he bought a farm south of Carlisle site unseen. Elizabeth was said to have been very disappointed when she seen what had been purchased. They both spent the rest of their lives there but also making trips back to Kansas to see family. Elizabeth being asked about the fact that she and William had stole a team of horses and wagon from her father, she answered by replying "Well they weren't his best team and wagon"!
