His father, however, had land in Camden District South Carolina, some fifty miles from Chester County. At the age of 22, he joined in the War of 1812. He served under General Andrew Jackson, a prisoner in the Revolutionary War who had been captured by the British and placed in prison in the Camden prison where the British kept their prisoners. James Hemphill's father, Captain Philip Walker, had captured British troops. Captain Philip had bargained with the British and gained the release of Andrew Jackson and his brother Robert. Andrew and Robert were turned over to their mother who had come 45 miles to beseech the release of Andrew and Robert.
