A graduate of Sweet Springs High School, he attended the University of Missouri-Columbia before volunteering for service in the United States Merchant Marine during World War II 1943-1946.
He married Agnes S. Wylie in 1945 and following the war, he enrolled in the forestry school at Oregon State University where he graduated in 1949.
He worked for the Missouri Department of Conservation from 1949 to 1987, starting as a district forester in Warrenton, Mo. Moving to the state headquarters in Jefferson City, Mo he served in the farm forestry division rising to assistant state forester. From 1977 to 1987 he started the served as the director of the Natural History Division.
He was a founder of the Missouri Native Plant Society and the Walnut Council, a national forest products organization. A guest lecturer at the University of Missouri's School of Forestry and a Fellow of the Society of American Foresters, he was named the Professional Conservationist of the Year in 1987 by the Conservation Federation of Missouri.
In addition, he was a deacon, elder and Sunday School teacher at First Presbyterian Church, Jefferson City, and a member of the Masonic Lodge, Warrenton, Mo. They had five sons: Paul, Mark, Bruce, Glenn and David.
