BLACKWELL, CLAUDE C. M.D., of Birmingham passed away November 4, 2009. He was born October 3, 1911, a son of the late Cicero C. and Pauline H. Blackwell. Dr. Blackwell was a graduate of Phillips High School, Birmingham-Southern College and Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. From 1937 to 1942 Dr. Blackwell served his surgical internship at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Augustana Hospital in Chicago, Illinois and Fellowship in Surgery at the Lahey Clinic in Boston Massachusetts.
Dr. Blackwekk was at Walter Reed General Hospital, Washington, D.C. from 1942 until 1946 where he served as Chief of General Surgery from 1946 - 1949. After returning to Birmingham with extended active surgical practice he was at Highland Baptist Hospital and Baptist Medical Center Montclair, where he also served as President of Medical Staff. Dr. Blackwell was a member of the American College of Surgeons, Diplomat of American Board of Surgery, Jefferson County Medical Society, Medical Association State of Alabama, Southeastern Surgical Congress, Southern Medical Association and American Medical Association. Dr. Blackwell was also a member and former President of the Birmingham Surgical Society, a member of the Highlands United Church, The Country Club of Birmingham and The Club.
Dr. Blackwell was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Latham Blackwell, his brother, William C. Blackwell, brother-in-law, Chap Hodges and sister-in-law, Barbara Blackwell.
Left to treasure his memory are his son, Richard R. Blackwell; grandchildren, Matthew, Laura, Lindsay and Gregory Blackwell; brother, Jack H. Blackwell; sister, Jane Blackwell Hodges; nieces, nephews and other family members.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Elmwood Cemetery. Officiated by Senior Pastor David Carboni of Highlands United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials honoring Dr. Blackwell may be made to Highlands United Methodist Church, 1045 20th Street South, Birmingham, AL 35205 or to St. Martin's in the Pines, 4149 Montevallo Road, Irondale, AL 35210.
