"IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN. The Eighth Day of February in the year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Ninety Four. I, Nath'l Henderson Senior of York Co'ty, in South Carolina, being under an indisposition of body, but of sound sense, and disposing mind and memory, Thanks be to God for all his mercies and calling to remembrance the transitoriness of this life, and that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following Viz.
First--My will and desire is, that all my just debts and funeral charges be justly and fully paid by my execut'rs, hereafter named.
Item: I give and bequeath to my wife Ellanah Henderson a bright bay mare about eight years old, and her present horse cold one yr old and a Sorrell in colour, a grown cow, a feather bed stead and furniture complete, and what of my household and kitchen furniture I am now in possession of and which came by her marriage to me, the same all to be to her use and benefit for ever. I further allow my said wife to have and enjoy all the benefits and services of my two Negroes Dick and Sall untill her death, or change of station, and when either of those events takes place, the s'd Negroes is to be disposed of as hereafter directed and while in the possession of my said wife no immoderate usage or distressful treatment shall be given, or exercised by any one to said Negroes on pain of forfeiting three months of their labor or services for the first time of so doing and double that time for every such treatment afterwards; and further I allow my said wife as comfortable and plentiful a living off of the plantation I now live
one Barr shear, and one shovel plough with common trimmings to each which she is to occupy while she continues on the premises, and if it is amicably agreed on between my s'd wife and my other family connections whom it may immediately concern for her my s'd wife to continue on the premises during pleasure and carry on the plantation business in conjunction with my sons Nath'l and Robert, it would be agreeable to my present desire, but if the same is objected against I allow my wife as aforesaid and at the expiration of her time on the premises, the survey of land I now live on containing by estimation 640 acres is to be divided between my sons, Nath'l, Daniel, James, Robert, Samuel, and Thomas the most equitable way my execut'rs shall adjudge to be right.
Item: I, give and bequeath to my daughter Elizabeth Henderson my Negroe girl named Pheaba who is about 7 or 8 years old together with the un bequeathed part of my household and kitchen furniture, a feather bed and furniture, two grown cows, and her choice of my number of young horses creatures together with a small survey of land on Pacolate River in this state which is not to include the Spring joining the old place all of which is to be to her use and benefit for ever.
Item: I give and bequeath to my son Nathan'l Henderson my Negroe girl named Lucy to be to his use benefit and disposal for ever; but if on a calculation it is found that my said son Nathan'l exceeds any of my other sons in legacy those that are short of an equal shear with him are to be made equal out of my un bequeathed different kinds of stock.
Item: I give and bequeath to my sons John Henderson the sum of five shillings sterling to be to his use and benefit for ever. Further my desire is that all my un bequeathed substance be applied to the making those of my sons in the most need equal with those that on a calculation is found to be over an equal shear with each other, and Lastly I do appoint my s'd son John Henderson of Elbert Co'ty in Georgia and my son Samuel my whole and sole executors of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all other wills by me made prior to the date of this in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year above written sign'd seal'd published and declared by the testator to be his last will and testament, in Presence of

Will Book A-12, P-96
The wording of the will certainly indicates that Ellenah/Eleanor was not the mother of Nathaniel's children. The witnesses, Joseph and Thomas Carroll were the brothers of Elizabeth Carroll.
That Eleanor is the second wife of Nathaniel Henderson, and not the mother of his children is proved in the publication, Descendants of the Roach Family of York County, South Carolina, by Max Perry. Chapter 1, page 1: "Samuel Roach---married Eleanor Springs--she married second, George Dodds, Dodds died in 1784 and Eleanor Springs md. Nathaniel Henderson. This is
further supported by the terms of a contract, Book C, p. 366, York Co. SC, between "Ellenah Henderson, wife of Nathaniel Henderson, deceased, and Samuel Henderson, Executor." It was executed to satisfy Eleanor for her right of dower in all the landed property of her husband in his last marriage.
From Lincoln County, NC. records, Book 2, pp244-47, are Indentures made 1 Jan. 1776, between other parties and Nathaniel Henderson and Elizabeth Henderson, his wife, of the County of Tyron in the Province of NC. Their sons, John and Thomas were born in this area.
For the descendants of Nathaniel Henderson, the Revolutionary Patriot and Soldier, I would like to include the Audited Accounts of Revolutionary Claims Against SC: file #3524.

Nathaniel Henderson was a Patriot and a Soldier
in the American Revolutionary War. He served 26 days in
the militia. He was born probably in Ireland or Pennsylvania and
later moved to York Co. SC apparently until he died Feb
20, 1794.
He married Elizabeth Carroll, dau. of Joseph
Carroll, Sr. and JennetSwansey. Joseph also provided
the Continental Army with provisions during the war.
Elizabeth died and Nathaniel remarried in 1784 to Eleanor
Springs. How do we know Elizabeth Carroll was the
wife of Nathaniel Henderson who died 1794 in York Co and
was the mother of the children named in his will? The
1777 will of Joseph Carroll
names his daughter, Elizabeth, wife of Nathaniel Henderson.

Nathaniel Henderson's will may be found in York Co. SC,
probate records: Case 57, file 181, Will Book A-12, page 96.

Nathaniel Henderson/Elizabeth Carroll may/may not have been related to Samuel Henderson/Elizabeth Williamson 0f Granville Co, NC. and/or Virginia Hendersons. This Nathaniel Henderson WAS in Chester Co, PA, in the 1750's with his brother-in-law Wm Ratchford and their father-in-law Joseph Carroll. Nathaniel and Elizabeth were the parents of children named in his 1794 will: John/Elizabeth Lindsey (Elbert Co, GA > Tenn); Thomas/Elizabeth Ratchford (Pendelton Dist, SC); Nathaniel, Jr./Sarah Turner(York Co, SC); Samuel/Isabella Reese (Jackson Co, GA); Robert/Abigail Ratchford (Cass/Bartow Co, GA); James/Frances (Spartanburg Co, SC > Clarke Co, GA); Daniel/(1)Anne Brown, (2) Isabel (SC > GA > AL/MS); and Elizabeth/Samuel Carroll (Fayette Co,TN). There is also overwhelming evidence that there were other children: Daughter/John Cansler (York Co, SC > Elbert Co, GA > Pickens Co, SC); Joseph (York Co. SC > Pendelton Dist, SC), and Ruth/William Henderson (York Co, SC > Pendleton Dist, SC > Hall Co, GA) Have done exhaustive research on this line.
