Joseph Francis Brass Devin was the first of his family to be born in the state of California. His father and mother were both born in Ireland, emigrated to Illinois, then to Northern California before settling in Los Angeles County. Joseph F. Devin was born on the Coyote Pass Ranch, 1872, in San Gabriel Valley. His father was also named Joseph Francis Devin and his mother was Ellen Brass. When the younger Joseph F. was presented for baptism, the priests objected to the name "Brass," as it was not the name of a patron saint, so I (the contributor) have included it here, as it was originally intended. In 1895, Joseph F. met Sarah Catherine McDonald and they were married in San Bernardino, CA. As a young man, Joseph F. worked for the Wells Fargo Co. and was stationed at the Mojave Station. Later, 1903, he established his own Moving Company in the Santa Barbara area. This was followed by owning a Stationery & Office Supply Store in San Bernardino, and finally, he went to Law School in Los Angeles and became an attorney. He and his wife had six children, four who lived to maturity, and five grandchildren. He died from complications of a stroke and is buried in the family area at Calvary Cemetery in East Los Angeles.
