My gggg grandfather, Joseph Elias Carroll, was the son of Joseph Carroll and Jennet Swansey. He married Martha Swansey on 28 Feb 1771 in York Co., SC. He enlisted and served at various times in 1779, 1780 and 1781 as a private and quartermaster-sergeant under Captains Thomson, Henderson, Garrison and Barnett, Colonel Henry Hampton and General Sumter. He was in the battles at Stono Ferry, Huck's Defeat, Rocky Mount, Kings Mountain, Quinsby's Bridge and Eutaw Springs. His brothers, John, Samuel and Thomas Carroll also served in the same army at the same time.
