During his younger years on the farm, Simon took pride in his bird dogs and enjoyed playing baseball. He caught for his brother Jack who was attempting to get into professional baseball.
He was a veteran of military service during World War I. He was a private in the U.S. Army, Cavalry, and served in France.
After the war he went to barber school and became a registered barber with the Department of Registration and Education of the State of Illinois on July 28, 1920 and received his Practitioner of Barber Science on Dec. 7, 1936 from the Education Department, Journeymen Barbers International Union of America.
During his barbering career he worked in Cincinnati, Ohio; Covington, Kentucky; and Ludlow, Kentucky. He owned his own shop at one time. During World War II (1942-45) he worked at the Wright Aircraft Factory in Covedale, Ohio and did barbering part-time during that period. He retired in the mid 1950s.
He married Sep. 18, 1933 at Brooksville, Bracken County, Kentucky to Gertrude Matilda Kern with whom he had one son.
