CHESTER -- Mr. Amos H. Gantt, 82, of 116 Academy St. died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2006, at home.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Bethel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. A. Judson King officiating. Burial will be at Chester Memorial Gardens.
A native of Cleveland County, N.C., Mr. Gantt was a son of the late John Gantt and Margaret McSwain Gantt. He was a decorated U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served as a staff sergeant with Co. F, 355 Infantry Regiment, 89th Infantry Division. He was a graduate of Cleveland County schools and attended North Carolina State University. He was the manager of the Colonial Stores, opened the first Bi-Lo store in Chester and managed Schlegel Manufacturing Co. He also worked as a recreation director with Leroy Springs & Co., where he managed Springs Park and helped to develop the Anne Springs Close Greenway. He served as a commissioner on the Chester Metropolitan District Board, was active as a Boy Scout Leader with Troop 74, helped to organize ball teams in the county and was active in the Democratic Party. He was an active member of Bethel United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Helen Gantt; two sons, Steven A. Gantt of Columbia and Ned W. Gantt of Orlando, Fla.; his daughter, Susan Kovas of Chester; his brother, Robert Gantt of Spartanburg; his sister, Ruby Putman of Shelby, N.C.; and four grandchildren.
