Notities over Warin de Munchensy , Lord of Swanscombe

WARIN DE MUNCHENSY, brother and heir, unmarried and apparently a minor at his brother's death, gave the King 2,000 marks, to have his inheritance, 23 December 1213. He was involved on the side of the Barons against King John, and his lands were forfeited; but he returned to his allegiance by November 1217. In 1221 he accompanied the King to the siege of Byham; was serving in Wales with his brother-in-law, William, Earl of Pembroke, in 1223, with the King overseas, October 1229 to April 1230, in Wales at the end of 1233, and in Gascony 1242-44, taking part in the battle of Saintes. In May 1244 he was summoned against the Scots, and in June 1245 for service in Wales; in August 1252 for service again in Gascony, which he evidently performed, having respite for aid in respect of that expedition. He was at Dover on 26 December 1254, the day Henry III appears to have crossed from Boulogne. His very rich inheritance and feudal influence were augmented by his first marriage. He married, 1stly, after her father's death (he died 14 May 1219), Joan, youngest of the 5 daughters of William (MARSHAL), EARL OF PEMBROKE, by Isobel, suo jure Countess of Pembroke, and, in her issue, coheir of her brother Anselm, EARL OF PEMBROKE. He married, 2ndly, between November 1234 and June 1235, Denise, widow of Walter LANGTON, of Langton, Lincs, and Ridgwell, Essex (d. 1234), and daughter and heir of Nicholas DE ANESTY, of Ansty and Little Hormead, Herts, probably by a sister of Hamond PECCHE. He died about 20 July 1255. On 1 August order was made for assignment of dower to his widow, and her marriage granted to Guy de Rochfort. In February 1257 she fined 200 marks to marry whom she would, and married, before Michaelmas 1260, Robert (or Richard) BUTYLLER, who was living in 1266, but appears to have been dead in the autumn of 1272, when Denise alone was party to a fine. She founded an abbey of Minoresses at Waterbeach, Cambs. She died 1304. [Complete Peerage IX:421-2, XIV:493, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]

!Lord of Swanscomb. [Magna Charta Sureties]

FOSTER, WAITE, NEWLIN LINES

Wealthy baron who m.1 Joan Marshal and was father of John and Joan; m.2 Denise/Dionysia de Anesty and was father of his eventual heir, William. Probably because his first wife had never enjoyed her share under the inheritance partition, Warin did not obtain the normal life-tenancy of a surviving husband 'by the courtesy of England' and Joan's share passed directly to her children. [Pembroke Castle, p. 9]

m. Joan Marshall; father of Joan who m. sir William de Valence. [WFT Vol 1]

Lord of Swanscombe and Lord of Manor Brabourne; son of Hubert de Monchensie; m. Joan le Marshal; father of Joan de Monchensie. [Charlemagne, Alfred the Great, and Other Ancestors, Chart 2505]
