WILLIAM 'Le Gros', Count of Aumale, Lord of Holderness, son and heir. Hewitnessed two charters of King Stephen in 1136 as Willelmus de Albamarla,not being placed among the comites. He distinguished himself at thebattle of the Standard in 1138, and was made Earl of Yorkshire as hisreward. He was with King Stephen in his defeat at Lincoln, 2 Feb1140/1. He founded the Abbey of Meaux in 1150 (c).
He m. Cicely, Lady of Skipton, daughter and coheir of William FitzDuncan, by Alice, Lady of Skipton, daughter and coheir of William deMeschin, Lord of Copeland (d). He dspm., 20 Aug 1179, and was buried inthe Abbey of Thornton, co. Lincoln, which he founded in 1139. [CompletePeerage, I:353]
