WILLIAM DE ST. JOHN, 1st son and heir, succeeded to his father's lands inEngland and Normandy. He held his court at Halnaker. On the accession ofRobert de Torigny to the abbacy of Le Mont-St-Michel in 1154, he didhomage to him for the lands which he held of the abbey. In 1162 togetherwith his wife Olive and his brother Robert he executed a charter for theabbey of La Luzerne, and in 1170 he was one of the tutors of the youngKing Henry. In 1172 the abbot and convent of Le Mont-St-Michel grantedhim the forestership of their forest of Bévais as held by hispredecessors. At a date not later than 1174 he was on a jury to ascertainthe rights of the King in Normandy. In 1174-75 he confirmed his father'sgrant of the church of Compton to Lewes Priory, stipulating thatthenceforth the monks should not present a clerk who would not reside.Royal charters show him in frequent attendance on the King in Normandybetween 1166 and 1172; thereafter his recorded attendances are lessfrequent. He farmed the vicomti of Coutances for over 40 years. In 1187with his 2nd wife Godeheut and his brother Robert he confirmed to Lessaythe gifts of his father and his grandfather Robert de la Haie. In 1189 heaccompanied Richard I to England for his Coronation.
William married, 1stly, in or after 1150 and before 1162, Olive, daughterof COUNT STEPHEN OF BRITTANY, LORD OF RICHMOND, and widow of Henry DEFOUGÈRES; and 2ndly, Godeheut, whose parentage is unknown. He died s.p.between Michaelmas 1201 and Michaelmas 1202, and was succeeded by hisgreat-nephew William DE PORT, afterwards William DE ST. JOHN.
