The Lordship of Clun in Shropshire belonged, temp. Stephen, to Ellis deSay, whose daughter and heir, Isabel, brought it to her husband, WilliamFitzAlan, feudal Lord of Oswaldestre (ie. Oswestry) in that co., who d.abt 1210. Their son and heir, William FitzAlan, Lord of Clun andOswestry, dsp 1216, and was succeeded by his brother and heir, JohnFitzAlan, Lord of Cluny and Oswestry, who m. Isabel, sister (whose issuebecame coheirs) of Hugh d'Aubigny, Earl of Arundel. This John FitzAland. 1240, and was succeeded by his son and heir, John FitzAlan, feudalLord of Clun and Oswestry, to whom (jure maris) the Castle and Honour ofArundel were awarded, 27 Nov 1243, whereby, according to the admission of1433, he became Earl of Arundel. . . William FitzAlan, in the contest between King Stephen and the EmpressMaud, being then governor of Shrewsbury and sheriff of the county ofSalop, held the castle of Shrewsbury for the latter until it was taken byassault. He was also with the empress at the siege of Winchester Castlein the 6th Stephen [1141], when she and her whole army were put toflight; and afterwards, continuing to adhere stoutly to the same cause,he was reconstituted sheriff of Salop so soon as King Henry attained thecrown. This William m. Isabel, dau. and heir of Helias de Say, Lady ofClun, niece of Robert, Earl of Gloucester, and dying some time before1160, was s. by his son, William FitzAlan.
