Henry de Percy, 3rd Lord (Baron) Percy; born c1320; saw extensive actionin the opening phase of the Hundred Years War; served in the 3rd (King's)Division at the confrontation of Flamengerie or La Flamengrie 1339(battle was not actually joined) and at Battle of Sluys June 1340(English victory over French), also the failed Sieges of Tournai July1340 and Nantes 1342, Crecy 1346 and Winchelsea (naval victory overSpaniards) 1350; succeeded father as hereditary Keeper of Berwick Castle,Warden of Northumberland coast June 1352, Jt Warden of the Marches July1352, commissioner for peace negotiations with Scots 1353 on, Keeper ofRoxburgh Castle and Sheriff of Roxburghshire 1355, Marshal of the RoyalArmy at Calais 1355; married 1st by Sep 1334 Mary (born c1321; died 1 Sep1362), 6th and youngest daughter of Henry, 3rd Earl of Lancaster of the1267 creation (2nd son of Edmund Crouchback, 1st Earl of Lancaster, 2ndson of Henry III); married 2nd by May 1365 Joan, Baroness Orreby andBaroness Mare in her own right, daughter and heiress of 2nd Lord (Baron)Orreby and 3rd Lord (Baron) Mare of De La Mare, and died c 18 May 1368.[Burke's Peerage]

BARONY OF PERCY (III) 1352

HENRY (DE PERCY), LORD PERCY, son and heir, aged 30 and more at hisfather's death. In March 1343/4, as Henry de Percy le fitz, he was goingabroad with the Earl of Arundel in the King's service. He fought atCrécy, 26 August 1346. In 1348 he served on a commission of inquiry inYorks. In November 1349 he went on service to Gascony, under the Earl ofLancaster, and in August 1350 fought in the King's naval victory over theSpaniards off Winchelsea. He succeeded his father as hereditary Keeper ofBerwick Castle. In March 1352 he was a commissioner to receive King Davidof Scotland on his return to captivity; in June he was a warden of thecoast of Northumberland; and in July joint Warden of the Marches. InOctober 1353, and following years, he was a commissioner to treat as tothe return of King David, and for peace. In September 1355 he was Keeperof Roxburgh Castle and Sheriff of the county; and in that month hecrossed with the King from Sandwich, being made marshal of the royal armyin Calais. He took part in the King's expedition to Champagne in October1359; in August 1360, and in 1362, was a plenipotentiary to negotiatewith David of Scotland, and on 19 October 1364 witnessed at Dover themarriage treaty of Edward, Earl of Cambridge, and Margaret, Duchess ofBurgundy.

He married, 1stly, at Tutbury Castle, in or before September 1334, Mary,daughter of Henry, EARL OF LANCASTER, by Maud, daughter of Sir Patrick DECHAWORTH, of Kidwelly. She died 1 September 1362, and was buried atAlnwick. He married, 2ndly, in or before May 1365, Joan, daughter andheir of John, LORD ORREBY, by Margaret his wife. He died about 18 May1368, and was buried at Alnwick. His widow's marriage was granted in Julyto Richard Stury, and she had assignment of dower 6 November following.She married, 2ndly, Sir Constantine CLIFTON, and died at the end of July1369. Henry de Percy, 3rd Lord Percy, of Alnwick, who, in the lifetime of hisfather, had participated in the glories of Cressy (28 August, 1346). Hislordship m. 1st, in her ladyship's fourteenth year, Lady MaryPlantagenet, dau. of Henry Earl of Lancaster, which Henry was son ofEdmund, Earl of Lancaster, Leicester, &c., 2nd son of King Henry III. Bythis alliance, his lordship had two sons, Henry, his successor, andThomas. His lordship m. 2ndly, Joan, dau. and heiress of John de Orreby,of Lincolnshire, one of the barons in the reign of Edward III, by whom heleft one dau., Mary, who m. John, Lord Ros, of Hamlake, but d. s. p. in1395. He d. 17 June, 1368, and was. s. by his elder son, Henry de Percy,4th Lord Percy of Alnwick.
