SHELBY - Mrs. Shirley Bridges Freeman Pearson of Cleveland Pines Nursing Center, formerly of 1434 Maple Springs Church Road, died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, at Hospice at Wendover.
A native of Cleveland County, she was born Oct. 14, 1920, a daughter of the late Torrance F. Bridges Sr. and Effie Bridges Brock. She was a graduate of Number Three High School and was retired from Doran Textiles. She was a member of Shelby Freewill Baptist Church, where she taught the Mother's Sunday school class and served on the flower and food committee. She was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, the Amvets Auxiliary and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She served as commander of the DAV Auxiliary, on the Scholarship Committee and as the Americanism Chairman.
In 1999, she received the Ruth Graham Woman of the Year Award from the DAVA. She served as a member of the Cleveland County Veterans Council and was a volunteer at the VA Medical Center in Oteen, where she was a member of the Veterans Volunteer Service. She was a member of the Shelby Rescue Squad Auxiliary.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Clyde Tallmadge Freeman, and her second husband, Doyle Newton Pearson; two brothers, Zaye Bridges and Calton F. Bridges; a grandson, Timothy Doyle Borders, and a granddaughter, Terry Ann Borders.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Gertrude and Leon Ledbetter of Shelby and Joyce and Ronnie Borders of Shelby; a brother and sister-in-law, T.F and Doris Bridges of Shelby; a sister-in-law, Daisy Willis and her husband, Charles, of Shelby; one granddaughter, Crystal Biddix and her husband, Keith, of Shelby; three grandsons, Joel Ledbetter and wife, Jane, and Christopher Borders, all of Shelby, and Keith Borders and wife, Sharon, of Rock Hill, S.C.; and five great-grandchildren, Joshua Biddix of Boone, Justin Ledbetter, Jordan Ledbetter and Johathan Ledbetter, all of Shelby, and Hannah Borders of Rock Hill.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home with Dr. Ed Hutchinson officiating. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be her grandsons and great-grandsons.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Leon and Gertrude Ledbetter, 1519 Maple Springs Church Road, Shelby.
