Thomas H. Jaggers
Another one of the loved and honored citizens of Monticello, and Drew County was called by death during the past week. On Saturday night, Thos. Harvey Jaggers passed to his eternal reward. He had been sick for a little more than two week having had a stroke of paralysis on December 12, following a stroke of apoplexy about three years ago. Apparently he suffered a third stroke on Saturday night, and death was instantaneous.
Mr. Jaggers was born near Chester, South Carolina, September 5th, 1856, and moved with his parents and brothers and sisters to Arkansas in 1870. This being before there were any railroads in Arkansas, the family came by boat to Pine Bluff and from there they went in wagons to their new home near where Relf's Bluff is today. In 1873, he united with old Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church of which "Parson" Brown of sainted memory, was then pastor. After moving to Monticello some thirty-five years ago, he placed his Church membership in the First Presbyterian Church of this city and served ably and well as a deacon in this Church for more than twenty-five years. He is survived by two brothers, A. B. Jaggers and Ed Jaggers, a sister, Mrs. Mattie Burks, his wife, and his wife's brother Shirley Jaggers, who was reared in their home.
Mr. Tom Jaggers, as he was familiarly known, was a citizen of whom the town was justly proud and one who will be sorely missed. Standing on the right side of every moral question, favoring all movement for the betterment of the town and its citizens and earnest Christian, and an active worker in the Church, a lover of children and young people, his place will be hard to fill. The world is a better place for such men having lived in it and his passing is a challenge for someone to take his place. "Blessed are the dear which die in the Lord."
