George S. Covert was a First Lieutenant in the 18th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry, representing the Confederate States of America, when he was captured by the Union Army on April 6, 1865, at the Battle of Sayler's Creek in Virginia. He was transferred, as a prisoner of war, to Johnson's Island Prison near Sandusky, Ohio, on April 17, 1865.
After the war, George settled in Meridian, Mississippi, where he was president of the Meridian Sash & Blind Factory and the Meridian Furniture Factory, as well as a builder of structures that included St. Patrick's Church and the Southern Hotel. He also became president of the Mechanics' Aid Building & Loan association and director of the Meridian National Bank.
A devoted husband and father, George was married to Mary Ann Gully Brooke. They had nine children.
