REMARKS: Carrie Alma, "Carrie", Withrow was born July 17, 1880 in
Rutherford
County, North Carolina, the daughter of Jason Withrow and Lou Sweezy.
She was
one of at least two children: Carrie Alma, "Carrie"; and Lela Withrow.
In 1908, Carrie Withrow married Thomas Forbis, "Tommy", Elliott, son of
John Paxton Elliott and Sarah Beam. They had one son, Valentine Jason,
"Val",
Elliott. This was Tommy Elliott's second marriage. His first wife died
in
January 1904 after giving birth to their youngest child. Three of the
older
girls had married and one had died, but two of
Tommy Elliott married Belle, "Belle" Hoyle in November 1878, and they had
eleven children: Susan Ola, "Susan"; Sarah Therissa, "Sarah"; Mary
Forbis,
"Mary"; Margaret Gordon, "Mag"; Julia Ann, "Julia"; Alice Hoyle, "Alice";
John
Paxton, "John"; William Christopher, "William"; Florence Belle,
"Florence";
Virginia Wells, "Ginny"; and Rebecca Belle, "Belle", Elliott. The Tommy
Elliott
family lived in Polkville,
Cleveland County, North Carolina. Caroline Withrow Elliott died in 1958.
first wife, Belle Hoyle Elliott. Tommy Elliott and his first had eleven
children. Three of the girls had married and one of the girls died by
1910.
Original data from Thomas Forbis Elliott family tree prepared by Mary
Gordon
Elliott. Additional data from descendants of Thomas Forbis Elliott. Sara
Elliott Hill, Carrie's granddaughter, stated in August 1994 that the
Thomas
Forbis Elliott family tree erroneously shows her name as Caroline.
The following data was provided by Sara Gwendolyn Elliott Hill, her grand-
daughter, in a letter to Ann Basore, dated July 7, 1991. Grandfather
(Thomas
F. Elliott) died when dad (Valentine Jason Elliott) was about three years
old.
His mother (Carrie Withrow Elliott) took Val and went back to her parents
home, near Hollis. They lived in the Withrow house until January 1939,
when
they moved to a two-room house near where dad lives now. The two-room
house
was crowded, but one of the rooms was fairly large. It was used as a
living
room and bedroom. (Val had married Nettie Jones in April 1932, and the
youngest of the four children was born in January 1939.) Grandmother
moved
with them, but she was never happy that she had to leave her mother.
Great
Grandmother went to live with some of her other children. She died in
1941.
Grandmother lived until 1958 or 59. Grandmother always lived with us,
but she
was a complete invalid the last seven years of her life. Dad and Mom had
a
hard time during those years. (The '30s were the years of the Great
Depression. The economy in North Carolina did not recover until the
'50s.)
Rutherford County, North Carolina, near Hollis. We lived there until Jan.
1939.

MUCH OF THIS RESEARCH IS FROM MERGED RECORDS.
TO INSURE ACCURACY YOU WILL NEED TO VERIFY THE DATA BUT YOU WILL KNOW WHERE TO START. I HOPE IT IS OF SOME HELP.
