James Irvin b. c1763 in Chatham Co. NC, d. May 15, 1845, aged 82 yrs, buried in the "family cemetery" (across the road from his homeplace, near Crest Jr. High School in Cleveland Co.). James Irvin built his home c1785 and lived there until his death. He was a soldier in the Rev (W-2117 Nat. Arch.), living in the 96 District of South Carolina at the time of enlistment, m. Rebecca Hardin 1795. She stated in her pension application that they were married in Lincoln Co. NC. James Irvin's will was filed for probate in Cleveland Co. 1845 term, wife, Rebecca, nine children and one granddaughter, Margaret Susannah Irvin, the daughter of John Irvin, deceased. (His sons, John Young and Isaac James were not living at the time he wrote his will.) The 11 children of James and Rebecca were: Susanna b. 15 May 1797 d. 9 May 1846, never married; Isaac James b. 5 March 1800 d. 30 July 1839; Abram Collins b. 4 Oct 1801 d 1 June 1865, m. 16 March 1830 Louisa Beam b. 1812; Rachael b. 19 Dec 1803 m. William Earls; John Young b. 5 Apr 1806 d. 16 June 1829; Martha "Patsey" b. 23 May 1818 m. Loranzo Dow Webb; James Wiley b. 17 Aug. 1810; Hannah b. 11 May 1813 m. Jesse Hardin; Ancil Jackson b. 2 Oct. 1815 d. 14 Sept. 1895; Elizabeth Martin b 24 Aug 1819 m. Matthias Mason; Sarah b. c1821 m. Michael Workman. The Hardin Daughter
The other daughter penned into the aged letter of Mrs. Lutts was one believed to have been married to Benjamin Hardin. Fortunately, we have more clues about this man than we had with Mr. Irvin. Among the numerous Hardin individuals resting in the Martin Cemetery (discussed in a later section), I have located a headstone with the following inscription: "In memory of Benjamin Hardin, a member of the M. E. Church, died April 19, 1850 in his 84th year." Born within a year of 1766, this is almost certain to be the husband that Mrs. Lutts was refering to. Here is what I have learned from a one Hardin researcher but have been unable to verify:
