LORIS - Derl Defae Boyd, 63, of the Lawndale community, died Sunday, June 27, 1999, at home after an illness.
He was born June 6, 1936, in Loris, a son of Delta Spivey Boyd and the late Benjamin F. Boyd.
He was the owner and operator of Boyd's Superette Grocery Store until he retired.
He attended Simpson Creek Primitive Baptist Church, was a Navy veteran, a member and Past Master of Loris Masonic Lodge No. 205 and served as Worshipful Master of the Lodge. He was a member of the Omar Shrine Temple and held the 32nd Degree within the Scottish Rite. He was the past director of the Goofy Golfers Shrine Unit. He was a volunteer driver for the Disabled American Veterans van.
Survivors, in addition to his mother of Loris, include his wife, Joyce Hughes Boyd of Loris; two stepsons, Tony Phipps of Arkansas, and Chris Phipps of Loris; a sister, Carolyn B. Grainger and her husband, Dennis Grainger, of Chadbourn, N.C.; a brother, Jerry W. Boyd and his wife, Brenda Boyd, of Loris; a niece, Jessica B, Hall; four nephews, Barry Grainger, Larry Grainger, Stephen Boyd, and Michael Boyd; a step-granddaughter; and a step-grandson.
He was predeceased by a son, Derl D. Boyd Jr., and a brother, Billy G. Boyd.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 tonight at Hardwick Funeral Home in Loris. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hardwick Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Twin Cities Memorial Gardens with full Masonic Rites. Elder George Paul and Elder Ernest Duncan will officiate.
