Maj A.S. Pickering was according to the museum @ Vicksburg National battlefield "Mortally wounded when the 13th 20th Alabama were exposed to the main body of the Union invasion force on May 1st,1863 @ Port Gibson, Ms. Some 18 days before the siege at Vicksburg." He is buried at the Vicksburg National Battlefield. According to family lore his wife Sarah widowed with five children moved to Tupelo, Ms where she died shortly thereafter. The five children were brought back to ala, and were raised by her sister who never married a Lucinda Morrow. The five Children were from Eldest to youngest were William,John W,Sallie,Sarah and Alfred. William we know moved to Texas, John W. my great-great grandfather settled in Dallas co,Ala north of Selma, Sallie Married William Shelby , grandfather of US senator Richard Shelby from ala, moved to Tuscaloosa co, Sarah it is believed died in her teens of pneumonia and Alfred moved to Tupelo Ms, William or uncle Billy as he was known settled around what is now Tyler tx CS
